Nagaland Chief Minister TR Zeliang announced on Sunday that he has decided to quit amidst political crisis.

Speaking to ANI on this issue, he said, "I have decided to step down from office, new consensus leader to be selected tomorrow at an emergency meeting." An emergency meeting of Naga People's Front (NPF) has been called on Monday at 10 AM, followed by a meeting of Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) at 11 AM.

According to reports, former chief minister and Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio will be replacing Zeliang.

On Thursday, at least 34 NPF legislators had chosen its Party President Shurhozelie Liezietsu to replace Zeliang. According to an AIR report, however, now 45 legislators have elected Rio as their new leader of the NPF legislature party, who is going to replace Zeliang.

In the 60-member assembly, the ruling Democratic Alliance of Nagaland comprises 48 NPF legislators, including suspended legislator Imkong Imchen, four of BJP MLAs and eight Independents. Sources said that the BJP, which has four MLAs, would continue to be part of the new government led by Rio.

Political situation has been boiling ever since the Nagaland Tribal Action Committee began their agitation demanding the resignation of the Chief Minister.
