The hospital superintendent AK Mondol said "the hospital authorities are in a position to release her, but the convent authorities have not communicated to us their final decision." The medical board constituted to examine the Sister Superior has examined her and the nun is taking her food and medicines, the superintendent said. President of Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) Baselios Cardinal Cleemis had met the septuagenarian nun and prayed with her at the hospital on Wednesday.
Immediately after arriving at Gangnapur, the Cardinal went to the convent to meet the other nuns to give them moral support and visited the nun at the hospital. "Justice should be made visible and such act should not continue. We are here to see personally what has happened," he had said.
The West Bengal government on Wednesday decided to hand over the case to the CBI as the demand for justice grew louder with the culprits still at large. "The CM has ordered a CBI probe and we are very happy and satisfied. We hope for the best," the Cardinal said after calling on the chief minister at the state secretariat. The Archbishop of Kolkata Thomas D'Souza had also welcomed the state government's move to hand over the investigation of the Rangaghat nun gangrape case to CBI.
He, however, said that he was disappointed that the state government had not yet been able to make any arrest. No arrest could be made so far although 15 persons have been detained in this connection, the police had said.
The 71-year-old Sister Superior of the Convent of Jesus and Mary at Gangnapur in the Ranaghat sub-division in Nadia district was gangraped in the early hours on Saturday.
