On Wednesday, NCP chief Sharad Pawar met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought a special programme to deal with farmer suicides as well loan waiver for Maharashtra's peasants. Pawar is also learnt to have urged Modi to reconsider around Rs 6000- crore recovery initiated by income tax department from the state's co-operative sugar mills "which are faced with financial crisis".

"Conveyed urgency of loan waiver for #farmers in #Maharashtra to @PMOIndia and requested prompt action. (sic)," Pawar tweeted after the nearly 20-minute meeting. Sources close to the leader said, "Pawar also expressed concerns over rise in number of farmer suicides in Maharashtra. He urged Modi to come out with specific programme to deal with the issue." Modi agreed to look into the demands Pawar made, the sources said.

Pawar also handed over a letter to PM Modi asking him to give his approval to make Marathi a classical language. He wrote in a letter: “I am told that all the required formalities are completed for this purpose and awaiting your final approval. I request, taking into consideration the feeling of Marathi speaking people, the proposal may be kindly approved at the earliest.”

What was particularly fascinating was that Pawar decided to add a personal touch where he wrote with his pen “My dear Prime Minister”. This comes at a time when politicians are almost always at loggerheads.

On the face of it, NCP chief Sharad Pawar and PM Narendra Modi share a complicated love-hate relationship. PM Modi once described NCP as the naturally corrupt party, while Pawar has gone back and forth on demonetization, much to the chagrin of BJP’s saffron ally Shiv Sena. Pawar’s latest touch might just give Uddhav another thing to worry about!  Shiv Sena leaders and its mouthpiece Saamana have repeatedly taken digs at PM Modi and his policies. The Fadnavis government is currently supported by Sena. But if Maha CM knows he has NCP to fall back on in case  of any 'emergency', it will certainly give him more legspace to deal with Shiv Sena.
