Continuing its action in the Muzaffarpur horror home case, the Bihar government has terminated the registration of Sewa Sankalp and Vikas Samiti, the NGO which operated the Balika Grih where at least 34 girls were allegedly raped and tortured over a period of time.

The NGO was owned by Brajesh Thakur, the main accused in the incident. Its registration was cancelled by the state registration department on the basis of the report of social welfare department (SWD), which had already blacklisted it.

The SWD had written to the registration body that the said NGO violated several rules indulged in illegal activities, following which the registration department terminated its license and send a letter regarding that to the Muzaffarpur District Magistrate.

A source said Thakur was the owner of over 10 NGOs, though most of it were registered in the name of family members or fake persons and the government is looking into the registration of others. Sewa Sankap NGO was registered in the name of one of Thakur's cousin Ramesh Kumar.

In a related development, the contract of another NGO, which ran the children's home in Bhagalpur, was also terminated by the government, following detection of irregularities in the social audit report of Tata Institute of Soical Sciences (TISS).

The state government has also put a restriction on sale and purchase of property by Brajesh Thakur's family members or the functionaries of his NGO. "The NGO officials cannot do any property related transactions," said Sanjay Kumar, an official in the registration office, Muzaffarpur.

"We found that Thakur's son Rahul sold land worth Rs two crore in Muzaffarpur last month, following the registration of an FIR in the shelter home case. Thakur also has properties in Patna and some other districts and we are investigating it," a police source privy to the investigation told DNA.

In Patna, the police searched the premises of Aasra Home following reports that four girls were trying to "escape" from the shelter home on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday. "We are asking the girls if they faced any problems and why did they want to run away. We have also searched the premises and looked into the records of the facility," a local cop said.
