Bihar Social Welfare Minister Manju Verma, who was in the eye of the storm for the alleged role of her husband in Muzaffarpur shelter home rape case, resigned from her post on Wednesday.

Sources said she has submitted her resignation to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar

This comes amid reports that the call data record of main accused Brajesh Thakur has thrown names of many high-profile men including Manju Verma's husband Chadeshwar Verma.

"I resigned because media and opposition had created a furore, but I have full faith in CBI and Judiciary. I am sure truth will be out and my husband will come out clean," Verma said after submitting her resignation to Kumar.

She called for the call records of Brajesh Thakur to be made public. "Call records of accused Brajesh Thakur should be made public, we will then see who all he used to talk to," she said.

On Monday, Kumar had said that Manju Verma may be asked "to go" if anything is found against her in connection with the shelter home sex scandal which has rocked Bihar as well as national politics.

Kumar, also the JD-U president, had commented on Verma's resignation saying, "I cannot take action without any reason. I had called the SWD minister (Manju Verma) in person and inquired about the matter. She has denied any involvement in the matter."

The BJP too had said it stood by Verma with deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi tweeting that there were no charges against her.

The opposition had demanded the resignation of Verma in the wake of sexual abuse of girls at a state-funded shelter home in Muzaffarpur. Her husband's name cropped up in connection with the case.

She had denied her husband's involvement alleging conspiracy. "The day when allegations against my husband will be proved, I'll resign from my political and social life," Verma had said on July 26.

According to police sources, the call data record of Brajesh Thakur shows that Chandeshwar was regularly in touch with the main accused in the Muzaffarpur Balika Grih case in which at least 34 girls were allegedly raped and tortured at the state-run shelter home.

"They exchanged over a dozen phone calls in the last one year or so," the source said. Verma's name cropped up during the investigation when the wife of one of the arrested accused, Ravi Roshan, former child protection officer of Muzaffarpur, alleged that the minister's husband frequented the shelter home.

A source said that the CBI will interrogate Thakur on the basis of his call detail records. "The CBI team is also likely to interrogate SWD officials about how Thakur got licence for his NGOs and on what basis was he allocated the funds," the source added.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday had pulled up the Bihar government for funding the NGO running Muzaffarpur shelter home.

Asking what happened to errant officials who are responsible for negligence, the court said, "Why didn't the government act? Were the victims provided counseling?"
