A person was arrested on Monday for allegedly desecrating a temple in Muzaffarnagar with the alleged intention to trigger communal disharmony, police said. The arrested person has been identified as Deshraj, District Magistrate Koshal Raj Sharma and SSP HN Singh told reporters.

Police recovered an idol and other goods of the temple at Parasoli village under Budhana police station in the district from the accused. Sharma and Singh claimed that Deshraj has confessed his crime and that he did this to trigger communal tension in the area.

Deshraj was booked under sections 295 (defiling a place of worship), 153 (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) and 379 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code and police are interrogating about his possible connection with any organisation. The District Magistrate said that Deshraj will be booked under the stringent National Security Act in this connection.

Communal tension had gripped the district after a carcass was found in the temple last week. Members of a particular community demonstrated after the incident and several BJP activists and leaders, including Union Minister of State for Agriculture Sanjeev Balyan, visited the village and demanded investigation to apprehend the culprit.

Security has been tightened in the village and police have been deployed in strength.
