Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday attacked Narendra Modi government at Centre and asked the party leaders to be ready to protect the essence and idea of India.
The Congress Working Committee (CWC) chaired by party president Sonia Gandhi met in Delhi to discuss the current political situation and the upcoming presidential poll.
"We must be ready to protect the essence and idea of India which this government is seeking to extinguish," said Sonia Gandhi speaking at the meeting.
Gandhi also said that there was relative calm earlier in Kashmir but now there is growing confrontation, tension and fear. "The crisis in Jammu and Kashmir has come to represent the colossal failure of government," she said.
Gandhi also said that whatever success this (Modi) government has scored, it came from the projects started by the UPA government.
"There is a brazen campaign to straitjacket the whole country into regressive and narrow-minded world view during three years of NDA government," she said.
The highest decision-making body of the party met at the residence of Sonia Gandhi and was attended by party vice- president Rahul Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Top Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad, P Chidambaram, Ambika Soni, Janardan Dwiwedi and other CWC members were present during the meeting.
Addressing to media after CWC meeting, Azad said, "In last three years, nothing was seen except fear."
Stating that this government was only of slogans, Azad said, "On completion of three years, ministers were busy praising themselves on television channels. They looked hero on television, but zero on ground."
Azad also said that the government had promised to create jobs, but instead of that, those working in organised and unorganised sector have become unemployed. "Existing jobs have vanished and there are no new job," he said.
The CWC met at a time when the Congress is seeking to unite opposition parties ahead of the presidential election.
It wants a broad coalition of opposition parties in place ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections to take on the BJP. The BJP and its allies have gained in strength since the Modi government was formed in May 2014.
The CWC members had in November unanimously expressed "strong sentiment" for Rahul's elevation for the first time and may take it further.
At the November-7 meeting, all members, including former prime minister Manmohan Singh and senior leader A K Antony, had made a strong pitch for Rahul to take over the reins of the party.
The Congress president has created a record by being at the helm of the 130-year-old organisation for nearly two decades since late Sitaram Kesri's ouster by the CWC in early 1998.
Rahul was appointed party vice president in January 2013 at the Congress's brainstorming session in Jaipur.
