It’s time for feasting and get-togethers for the Muslim community in the city which will celebrate Bakri Eid on Saturday. Animals are sacrificed on this day in memory of the sacrifice of Hazrat Ibrahim. After the sacrifice, the meat is shared with poor people and donations are made.
It is believed that Allah once challenged the faith of his devotee Hazrat Ibrahim by asking him to sacrifice the person dearest to him. Ibrahim loved his son dearly, but promptly agreed to sacrifice the boy. He closed his eyes and raised his sword. But Allah replaced the boy with a goat. Since then, the day came to be celebrated at Bakri Eid. Preparations for the festival have been on in the city for past few days. A goat fair was organised where members of the community came to purchase animals for sacrifice. The fat ones were more preferred. Held in the open grounds in Behrampura, Shah e Alam and other Muslim-dominated areas, the fair witnessed people in large numbers. Talking to DNA, one such customer said, “I am here to buy a goat, which should be huge enough for the large family.”
Even the sellers had come from different states with the best of breeds that they had. Goats of good breed from Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Saurashtra region and other cities were put on displays for premium price.
