A block president of the ruling Trinamool Congress was shot dead by unknown gunmen, one of whom was lynched by local people in Bahrampur in Murshidabad district on Saturday evening, police said.

Three men came in motorcycle and fired at TMC Baharampur block president Masood Rana near a ration shop at Panchanantala area in Baharampur killing him. They also hurled bombs to scare people causing minor splinter injuries to some of them, police said.

However, while fleeing from the spot, one of the three men fell down from the motorcycle and he was lynched by the local people.

Local TMC leaders alleged that Congress was behind the murder of Rana while Congress claimed factional fight among the ruling party led to the killing. None was arrested in connection with the murders.
