Bibhash Chandra Biswas is a lucky man. The resident of Nadia is among those who miraculously survived the horrific bus tragedy in West Bengal’s Murshidabad.

As the death toll reached 41 on Tuesday, anxious relatives reached the accident spot to look for their loved one. With Aadhaar and Voter ID card in their hands, many were enquiring about the passengers travelling in the ill-fated bus.

The search operations resumed on Tuesday morning with officials saying the forensic test of the bus will be conducted today.

Five bodies have been fished out of the canal at Daulatabad in Murshidabad district, where a state bus had plunged into early on Monday morning.

Officials of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Disaster Management Group (DMG) had started a joint search operation in boats and divers have been engaged. Officials said that bodies drowned in water surface in 24 hours and more bodies are expected to be recovered on Tuesday as the day progresses. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem at Murshidabad Medical College.

“The bus had nosedived into the water and had got stuck in the slush and weeds at the bed of the river. I think some more bodies of people who got thrown out of the bus have been stuck there as well. We are trying to locate those,” said an NDRF official.

The bus, carrying 56 commuters had fallen into the canal breaking the bridge railing allegedly after the bus went out of control because the driver was talking over phone while driving.

Of the 36 bodies recovered on Monday, 34 have been identified. Two were residents of Birbhum, 12 from Nadia and 20 lived in Murshidabad.

State government had announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to family members of the deceased, Rs 1 lakh to those seriously injured and Rs 50,000 who sustained minor injuries.

Congress MLAs who visited the spot on Monday demanded government jobs for the next to kin of the deceased, along with the financial help.
