The Patna police arrested Manjar Alam, the main accused in the Munger AK-47 rifles smuggling case, from his hideout in a residential area in the state capital on Tuesday.

The development was confirmed by Patna Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manu Maharaaj, who said Manjar Alam alias Manji was an arms smuggler and also wanted by other security agencies in connection other cases. "He had once gone to jail in 2004 for arms smuggling. We have interrogated him and got some crucial clues on which we are working," the SSP said.

The police acted on a tip-off and raided Alam's hideout. "He kept changing his names but the police was doing continuous surveillance and searching for him. A local Munger-made pistol and some bullets have also been recovered from his possession at the time of the arrest," Maharaaj said.

Alam is the relative of Monazir, who was arrested from Hazaribagh in Jharkhand and is suspected to be the arms supplier of Left Wing Extremists (LWEs) in the area. "We have information to believe that Alam was the main link in the AK-47 smuggling racket who used to supply the sophisticated arms to criminals and others," a police source said. He added that Munger police were also on way to Patna to seek Alam's remand.

On October 2, the Munger Police had recovered over 75 attachments of AK-47 rifles -- magazines, pistol grip, bridge bolt, fold butt, gas tube, body cover, spring and guard -- from a well at Alam's home in Bardah village, on the information provided by one of the arrested accused Aamna Khatoon.

The Bihar Police had busted a major smuggling racket, spanning at least four states – Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh, in which 20 AK-47 rifles and parts of several others were recovered from Mirzapur Bardah village in the Bihar's Munger district, since August 29. Five FIRs have been lodged in this connection and multiple security and investigation agencies are probing the cases.

Sources said the weapons and their parts were most likely smuggled from the Ordnance Depot in Jabalpur and sold to politicians, musclemen and Left Wing Extremists in and around Bihar.
