In what might be of great help to outstation passengers arriving in Mumbai, the Western Railway has planned a “Meter se chalo” campaign from January 22.

In a press statement, WR said that this is an initiative of its Commercial Department.

"To stop taxis and auto-rickshaws from overcharging harried passengers, we will be launching a one-week customer campaign, titled “Meter se chalo" from Mumbai Central and Bandra Terminus stations starting from January 22 to January 28. The campaign will aim to enforce taxi and auto-rickshaw drivers to go by meter only, and to stop overcharging," said an official.

Banners with campaign slogan, helpline numbers etc will be placed at prominent locations. Passengers will be guided to come to taxi parking site and take the taxi.

RTO’s Toll Free complaint No. 1800220110 will be circulated among passengers.

The campaign will run with coordination with RPF, GRP, RTO with Ticket checking staff to be present at each site during a two-hour slot when maximum trains arrive. They will ensure that taxis are properly in line, passengers are also in line, and taxis depart by meter one by one. Erring taxis will be charged on the spot and punitive actions will be taken immediately.

Based on the learning of the seven-day campaign, things will be formalized and it will be ensured that all the taxis continue to run on meter, said an official.
