Heavy rains have been lashing several parts of Mumbai especially the eastern suburbs since the wee hours of Saturday as IMD declared around 11am declared the onset of Southwest monsoon over Mumbai, Thane and some more parts of Maharashtra.

The normal date of arrival for Monsoon in Mumbai is June 10 and this year it has arrived a day earlier.

As per IMD officials till from 8.30pm on Friday to 8.30 am on Saturday, Mumbai’s Colaba observatory recorded 38.2 mm while Santacruz recorded 37 mm of rains.

The eastern suburbs were lashed with overnight massive thunderstorms in last 24 hours ending 8am on Saturday with Bhandup(148mm) Ghatkopar(110mm) Mulund (107mm) Deonar (90mm) and Kurla (84mm). Even the Thane district’s saw heavy rains lashing overnight with Bhiwandi (210mm) Thane (84mm) Kalyan (43) recorded till 8.30am today.

While IMD has maintained its warning for Mumbai for Saturday, its officials said that there can be heavy to very heavy rainfalls across Mumbai and extremely heavy rainfall at few locations.

“There is no change in the warning issued for Mumbai. The city is expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfalls on Saturday and similar situation is likely to continue on Sunday after which the rain intensity is likely to reduce,” said Ajay Kumar, Scientist IMD.

When questioned about no rains on Friday, Kumar said that IMD in its forecast had said that rains were likely to begin from Friday night and we are expecting rains.

Akshay Deoras an independent meteorologist said that the reason for Mumbai not receiving any rains on Friday was that the low-pressure circulation, which was supposed to bring heavy rains stayed away from Mumbai coast. “There is likelihood of Mumbai receiving good rains on Saturday and Sunday as well but not as much as the hype has been created around the rains,” he said adding that instead of hyping up the warning IMD should have ensured that people were properly explained what ‘extremely heavy rainfall’ meant.

Meanwhile Deoras also shared that from June 12, the rainfall would be subdued, which is likely to affect farmers and hence they should not be in hurry for sowing.

Mahalaxmi-based Rajesh Kapadia an enthusiast, who has been in the field of weather forecasting for over 45 years now and also runs the Vagaries of Weather blog said that they had predicted around 75 to 95 mm of rains between Saturday morning to Sunday morning. “We have been asking people not to panic and not to cancel their flights and other important work as there would be typical Mumbai rains on Saturday as well as intermittent rains and strong winds with frequent showers and some place can witness flooding,” he said.
