After it failed to feature in several prominent global rankings in the last few months, the University of Mumbai has yet again landed in controversy for its failure to get accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council(NAAC).

The University has failed to apply for a fresh round of accreditation even as its previous ranking ended on Wednesday. In 2012, the University was awarded 'A' grade by the NAAC, a ranking which was valid only till April 20.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) is in the process of issuing new guidelines for the accreditation process for institutes across the country and had asked all institutes due for accreditation to submit their reports before March 31 failing which they would have to wait till the new guidelines are in place to be re accredited.

"The University has decided to apply for the re accreditation after the new guidelines are in place. We are working on keeping all the data ready for the process once the guidelines are into place, " said MA Khan, Registrar, University of Mumbai.

The new accreditation guidelines, which might limit the peer review process to only 20 per cent along with other changes are expected to be out only by July which would mean that the University has to wait for at least a year to be re accredited as experts estimate at least six months time to prepare the report to be submitted at the time of application. "The University has done a huge blunder by not applying before the deadline. Having to do without accreditation for months means losing on several funding opportunities and it also impacts the university's face value. With its own accreditation not in place, how can it expect affiliated colleges to do so?" asked AD Sawant, former pro-VC of the University.

A senior professor from the University said that there is very little preparedness for the accreditation. "The university is yet to have centralised data on placements, research etc. This would act as a major drawback which might affect the rating," said the professor.

What the University will miss

Funding from UGC bodies for schemes meant for Grade A institutions
Ineligible for special programmes under the UGC grants
Cannot use any old document/stationery which lists previous grade
