A resident of Scotland, who was on holiday to visit his family in Nagpada, was allegedly bitten by an Uber driver while travelling from his cousin’s home to the international airport in Mumbai on Monday night. While the driver has been suspended, the victim’s family has filed a complaint with the Nagpada police.

On Monday night, Zeba Shaikh had booked an Uber for her cousin Irfan, who was going to the international airport to catch a 2.30 am flight to Glasgow. Irfan had come to Mumbai to visit his cousins in Nagpada.

The nearest cab was a white Toyota Etios with the number MH01-GD 0190 driven by Shyam. The GPS said that the car was two minutes from the residence of the Shaikhs. However, the car had still not arrived 20 minutes into booking.

“One of my cousins then called the driver and started yelling at him for not being able to read a map,” said Zeba while speaking to DNA. “When he did finally arrive, we apologised for yelling before leaving for the airport. The passengers in the cab were Irfan and his wife, who were returning to Scotland,” she added.

The family was in for a shock when they received a call from Irfan, who told them that he had been bitten by the driver. “He told us that the driver stopped the vehicle at the domestic airport and told them to get off the cab and pay him money,” she said, adding that when they requested that the driver drop them to the international airport, he said that he would drive them to a police station to complain about the way they insulted him.

“Irfan told us that the driver took the car to a dark alleyway where fortunately there were a few people. He then tried to grab Irfan’s wife’s purse, which is when Irfan and he got into a heated argument and began assaulting each other. The driver then grabbed Irfan’s hand and bit it,” she alleged.

Zeba added that witnesses came to their aid and took away the driver’s keys. They even helped Irfan and his wife take another vehicle to the international airport. “We contacted Uber, who told her that while the driver had been suspended, his version of the story was that Irfan grabbed him by the collar first. My cousin isn’t the violent type and I hope that Uber terminates the driver before he does the same thing to anyone else,” she said.

The family also registered a complaint with the Nagpada police station and an FIR has been registered of which DNA has a copy.

When contacted, an Uber spokesperson said, ""We are looking into the incident. Given allegations of improper conduct on both ends, we have waitlisted both the rider and the driver partner's account, until further investigation."

DNA even tried contacting Shyam, the Uber driver, but he did not respond to our calls.
