Mumbai: Three-storey building collapses in Colaba; 3 workers severely injured

The incident happened on Monday afternoon in Mumbai's Colaba market.

A ground plus three-storeyed under construction MHADA building near Colaba Market in Mumbai was collapsed on Monday afternoon. Three labourers who were working inside the building were pulled out and rushed to the St. George Hospital.

The part of second floor of Badwariya Mansion at Lala Nigam Road in Colaba collapsed around 2.50 pm, while the repair work was underway. 

According to the BMC's disaster management official they received a call at 3.10 pm in the afternoon. "Nearby fire engines were rushed on the spot. A part of building collapsed and three workers were rescued from the debris. Three of them were rushed to the hospital out of which two of the workers were in critical condition."

The eye witness of the incident, Pratik Shah, said, "Luckily the building was vacant. The construction of the building started one month ago due to its dilapidated condition. Other building residents have also been called down due to the ongoing rescue work by the authorities. The front part of the building collapsed down making a huge sound."

The labours taken to the St. George Hospital are identified as Shankar Lal (45), Lalsingh Shaikh (35) and Bholu Shaikh (40). According to the on duty police officer a case has been registered against the contractor Babalu Sayed.

Police Inspector, Asaram Pathare, said, "Now the work of removing debris is in progress. The Labour named Shankar Lal is in critical condition. He suffered from head injury and fractures in left leg. While, the other two workers Bholu and Lalsingh suffered a head injury but are out of danger."
