With a majority of youngsters in city busy celebrating Dahi Handi, students of Vivekanand Education Society's Institute of Technology (VESIT) stepped up to help the authorities to maintain public discipline. They came forward to assist the police in maintaining law and order in Chembur. "With Gokulashtami celebrated with much pomp across Chembur and several mandals competing with each other, it becomes difficult for the police to deploy personnel in all areas for active supervision. Recognising the need for citizen participation in assisting the police maintain decorum and reduce instances of unruly behaviour, local self-help group Chembur Welfare Brigade approached us with a proposal a day before the festival. Despite the short notice, we agreed to help the men in khaki," said Kaustubh Dhake, third-year electronics engineering student and secretary of VESIT Social Responsibility Team (SoRT) cell.

Tushar Parwani, second-year computer engineering student and deputy secretary of VESIT SoRT, said, "The experience was awesome... it was my first time helping the police on field. No girls were made a part of the team as this being Dahi Handi, the chances of them facing difficulties and having to tackle unruly behaviour are higher. Just us 20 boys spread across Chembur to handle the crowd on the road as well as the traffic."
