Delhi-based singer Vandana Vadhera has accused a police constable of insulting and misbehaving with her, prompting officials to launch a probe into the alleged incident.

The inquiry into the incident, which took place in the early hours of  Wednesday, is being led by M Ramkumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone XII).

"I am personally probing the incident figuring the complainant (Vadhera), the accused constable and other policemen, who were on duty when it took place. Their statements will be recorded soon," Ramkumar told PTI on Thursday.

Ramkumar declined to comment further, saying "There isn't any case registered with the police and only a letter has been given by the complainant."

The 35-year-old singer, who stays in a rented flat in Royal Palms area of Aarey Colony in western suburbs, was on her way home in a cab when she was stopped at around 1 AM by policemen, manning the entrance of the Aarey locality.

According to the police, a constable, identified as Hemant Sawant, started inquiring with the car driver about where is he going and from where is he coming.

Subsequently, the constable started asking questions to Vadhera and demanded to see her identification card and address proof, they said, quoting from her letter.

Further, the Constable allegedly made a remark that he "knows what kind of people stay in the Royal Palms area". The policeman then used an offensive term to describe the singer, according to the letter.

Upon hearing this, the singer got angry and began to record the exchange of words on her cellphone, which caused Sawant to abuse her further, said Vadhera.

Finally, Sawant, attached to Aarey Colony Police Station, let Vadhera go.

Recently, the police set up a check-post in the densely forested area of Aarey Colony, where several sexual assault cases had taken place in the past.
