While the various infrastructure and transportation projects in the city of Mumbai have come to an end some projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region have started shaping up or are in the nascent stages of execution.
The projects that have got ready in Mumbai include Mumbai Monorail (Phase 1), Mumbai Metro, Santacruz Chembur Link Road, Panjarpol Ghatkopar (Mankhurd) Link Road, Eastern Freeway, etc.
Projects on which construction of works have been considerably done are Mumbai Monorail (Phase 2), Kherwadi flyover, etc.
Similarly in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region several projects are in the pipeline, some of which include Extended Mumbai Urban Infrastructure Project (MUIP), Multi Modal Corridor connecting Virar and Alibaug, Kalyan Ring Road, Shirgaon-Padgha-Titwala-Badlapur Link, Neral-Dasturi Naka-Matheran Road, Khopoli Bypass Road, etc.
"It is just a coincidence that here in Mumbai projects are now getting over while on the other hand work has begun in MMR," said a senior official of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
Feasibility studies are underway to undertake road projects like Kalyan Ring Road, Shirgaon-Padgha-Titwala-Badlapur Link, Neral-Dasturi Naka-Matheran Road, Khopoli Bypass Road, etc. in the Eastern Mumbai District.
Whereas under the Extended MUIP various roads, flyovers and creek bridges are being constructed apart from development of nine various roads in Vasai, Virar, Mira Road, Bhayendar, Dombivli, Kalyan, Ambernath, Karjat and Badlapur. Similarly, six flyovers are also under construction in these areas including Thane along with a rail over bridge on Thane-Belapur Road informed another MMRDA official.
The shift in focus of MMRDA is also because of the increase in the population to the region that is outside greater Mumbai limits. The development authority had resolved in October 2008 that it will focus on the regional infrastructure projects for overall development of the region.
