Taking a step ahead to contribute to the environment, Santa Cruz-based resident Rintu Rathod conducted a workshop for making Lord Ganesha idols using clay.

Rintu, who has been making various kinds of eco-friendly ganesh idol since the past few years, now has come up with an idea to teach others how to make the idols rather making an idol for them.

This workshop had a twist in it. Rather than charging the participants a training fee, she has asked the participants to join her and mentor disable children in the city. Within a month, the participants will be joining Rathod and her Food Army team to help and teach the special children of various organisations in the city.

Speaking about the idea, Rathod said: "This is the first time we have come up with the concept of 'Plant Ganesha'. On the day of immersion people have to keep this idol below a plant and pour water. The mud will melt inside the pot. This concept will help to immerse the idol in our house rather immersing them in any water body. During festival everyone should do some social contribute too."

Over 100 participants participated during the workshop on Sunday afternoon. According to Rathod, many participants came forward and extended a helping hand to teach the special children.

She said: "Under the guidance of these participants the special children will be making the idols. It will be a learning experience not only for the children, but also for the participants. A small contribution by a common man can create a lot of difference. So far, three organisations have been selected by us and within a month we will be conducting workshops for them."

The idols made by the children will be sold on social media via Facebook pages and WhatsApp group. The money will then be given to the disable children's organisation for the betterment of the children. "We are aiming to make at least 500 idols with the help of these children. The idols will later be sold at Rs250 each. People buying the idol can either pay directly to the organisation or else there will be an option of cash on delivery. We will be giving on details while people register to purchase those idols," said Rathod. The idols will be available on sale from the last week of August.

Besides this initiative, the members will also be going in various schools and colleges to teach the students to make the Ganpati idols.
