In a tragic incident that exposes the high-handedness of the municipal authorities in Mumbai and other townships in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), a woman was crushed under a bus after she fell off a bike that hit a pothole in Kalyan, a town just beyond Thane.

The incident, caught on CCTV camera, once again exposes the poor state of infrastructure in and around Mumbai, exacerbated by rain each year.

Manisha Bhoir, who worked at a school in Kalyan, was going home with a family member on Friday evening when the tragedy took place. In the video, she can be seen riding pillion as she holds up an umbrella in the pouring rain.

As the two-wheeler skidded over a pothole on the flooded road in Kalyan's Shivaji Chowk, Bhoir and her co-rider were thrown off the bike to their right, NDTV reported.

In no time, the rear wheels of a speeding bus ran her over. As her relative and passers-by rushed to pull her out, the bus inched forward, further crushing the woman. She died on the spot.

Earlier, it was reported that Mumbai had recorded three digit figures with respect to the amount of rain for the second consecutive day.

IMD officials said that city will continue to witness heavy rains on Monday, but its intensity might reduce slightly from afternoon till evening. However, the intensity is expected to pick up once again in the evening. With high tide being reported at 8.30 pm, it has been advised not to venture into areas such as Juhu beach, Versova, Marve in Malad, and Marine Drive.

Between 8.30 am on Sunday and 8.30am on Monday, the Colaba observatory had recorded 170 mm while the Santacruz observatory recorded 122 mm of rainfall.  The 24 hours rain recorded in Colaba on Monday was the highest since 2015.
