The Southwest Monsoon picked up momentum in Mumbai, bringing heavy showers that claimed four lives in the city and adjoining Thane.

Heavy rains lashed the metropolis and Thane district throughout the night and continued this morning, causing water-logging at several places and slowing the movement of suburban trains, thus causing inconvenience to office-goers.

Two persons were killed last evening when a tree fell on them near Metro Cinema in south Mumbai, said an official from the disaster management unit of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

A 13-year-old boy was killed and his parents were injured when an adjacent wall collapsed on their house at Wadol village in Ambernath taluka of Thane around 2.15 am today, the district civic body's regional disaster management cell chief Santosh Kadam said.

"Traffic is moving slow at Khar subway, Malad subway & Andheri subway due to waterlogging," Mumbai police tweeted. At around noon, the cops tweeted that both Khar and Milan subway had been opened once again, but cautioned that traffic was moving slowly.

In Mumbai, a huge part of a compound caved-in at Antop Hill area in Wadala. Around 15 cars were damaged with some vehicles getting buried under the debris, an official of the BMC's disaster management cell said.

A case was registered against Dosti Builders, a leading realtor in the city, who already has two properties in Wadala East.

“Antop Hill police station is registering a case against Dosti Realty Limited under sections 336 (Act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 287 (Negligent conduct with respect to machinery) in the road cave incident,” confirmed Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone IV, N Ambika.

Traffic has also been reported moving slow from areas such as Chembur, which has witnessed an increase in rains. A container broke down in Vikhroli, which has resulted in slow movement of traffic.

Leo Burnett CEO Prashanth Challapalli shared a post on Facebook on the dire situation at Khar subway. "Khar Subway is a death trap! My cab got stuck in the middle of the tunnel and water rose above the seat in less than 30 seconds. The engine cut off and the cab started floating. There is a huge amount of water that rushes in from the train tracks above. Had to open the door, stretch out to the railing on the side, vault over it and run as fast as I could to avoid the rising water level inside the tunnel. Combined with the crumbling walls of the tunnel, I wonder how long before it collapses and crushes people to death. No matter how long it takes to detour, please don’t take the subway when it rains like this. Actually don’t take the subway at all," he wrote.
