Mumbaikars who have been hoping for some respite from the incessant rains woke up to even heavier downpour on Tuesday morning. It is for the third consecutive day that Mumbai has recorded rainfall in three digit figures even as weathermen have predicted more rains throughout the day.

In the past 24 hours till Tuesday 8.30am, Santacruz observatory recorded 184.3 mm of rains, which is not only the highest rainfall received in July this season so far but also the highest rains witnessed in July since 2015. Meanwhile, the Colaba observatory recorded 165.8 mm of rains.

The rainfall intensity increased over suburbs on Monday post 8.30pm as in 12 hours (Monday 8.30pm to Tuesday 8.30am) Santacruz observatory recorded a massive 105.6mm of rains.

Meanwhile, IMD officials said that city will continue to witness intermittent heavy rains on Tuesday and Wednesday as well. “We have placed heavy rainfall warning for the entire Konkan and Goa belt including Mumbai till July 14 as heavy to very heavy rain at a few places with extremely heavy falls at isolated places is very likely over Konkan and Goa,” said the IMD official.

Since June 1 to July 10, the total rains recorded at Santacruz observatory has been 1,547.1mm while at Colaba observatory it has been 1,355.9mm. As per IMD officials, Mumbai has already crossed 50% of its total annual rainfall figures in 40 days itself.

City-based Rajesh Kapadia, an enthusiast who has been in the field of weather forecasting for over 45 years and also runs the Vagaries of Weather blog said that Tuesday will see intermittent spells of heavy rainfall. “In terms of measure, however, the rains will be less than the amount of rain of Monday. Frequent heavy spells with continued intensity in rainfall are expected on Wednesday. Mumbai will see fresh spells from Friday 13 July as a low pressure is likely to form in the Bay near Odisha coast by the July 13-14,” he said.

Meanwhile, Skymet a private weather forecasting agency said that Mumbai’s weather is presently under the influence of two strong weather systems- firstly, the offshore trough along the West Coast is active from South Gujarat to Konkan region and secondly, the cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal has now moved inland is seen over South Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh, and Vidarbha region. “Presence of both systems has led to the formation of a convergence zone over Maharashtra. These systems have infused fresh Monsoon surge over the state. Widespread clouding can be seen over entire Maharashtra.
