Monsoon is one season that throws the preparedness of the city's civic body and its urban planners in disarray every year. This can be evidenced by the fact that in the past six years, there have been more than 19,000 rain-related incidents across Mumbai, testing the capabilities of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Since Mumbai receives more rain than many other major Indian cities, the monsoon has continuously been a tormenting time for the commercial capital.

According to a detailed rain report for the period between 2010 and 2015, which is available with dna, there have been a total of 19, 545 monsoon-related incidents across Mumbai. These incidents include tree collapses, water-logging, house collapses, fires, short-circuits, drownings and landslides.

As per the information from 2010 to 2015, there have been a total of 8, 367 incidents of trees collapsing in the city, followed by 1, 275 incidents of branches falling on streets, footpaths and properties. In years accounted for, there have been a staggering 3, 560 incidents of water-logging across Mumbai from the months of June to September.

In the same time frame, 1,366 incidents of house collapse were reported, followed by a whooping 3,500 incidents of fires and 1,332 incidents of short-circuits.  When it comes to beach safety, there have been 71 cases of drowning.

Pre-monsoon planing witnesses the BMC earmarking landslide-prone areas and zones, as well as coordinating with the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) for relocation and construction of retention walls. However, despite the strongest efforts of the civic body, heavy showers have caused 74 incidents of landslides in Mumbai.

Tree collapse

In 2010, a total of 639 trees fell in the south Mumbai area, followed by 737 in the western suburban region of the city between June and September. In the next year, 555 trees fell in the western suburbs.  In 2012, the western suburbs witnessed 520 trees collapsing and in 2013, close to 372 trees fell in the same region. In 2014, around 545 trees collapsed in the city region, with the western suburban region witnessing 733 trees collapsing. The city region in the following year saw 598 trees going down, which was topped by the highest count of 886 trees collapsing in the western region.

Water logging

Urban planners have time and again directed the BMC to get Mumbai's basic drainage system right in order to save the city from deluge-like conditions. The need of the hour calls for investing in better and effective drainage systems across all major low-lying areas, which, as per the report, have faced the worst water-logging.

In 2010, there were 188 spots that were water-logged in south Mumbai, and this increased to 236 spots in 2011. The western suburban regions witnessed water-logging in 336 spots the same year. In 2013, there were 271 incidents of water logging in SoBo, with the western suburban regions recording 358 incidents, followed by 249 similar incidents in the eastern regions.

The situation changed slightly the following year, 2014, in which the western suburbs saw 232 water-logging incidents. Last year, the western suburbs saw an increased number of water-logging incidents, with a total of 269.
