Mumbai Police has banned the use of drones in the city. The city police have put the ban in place citing a possible terror attack between July 4 and August 2, just weeks before Independence Day.

The ban has been put to prevent any attack through "drones controlled by remotes or through Controlled Aerial Missile or using Para-gliders or through Remote-Controlled Micro-light Aircraft" for this duration.

The move comes after an unidentified drone was spotted hovering above the Tata Institute of Social Sciences complex in Trombay on Monday afternoon.

The presence of the drone triggered a security alert as the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre is located near TISS. BARC, which includes advanced nuclear labs, has been on a terror hit list for years.

The police investigating the TISS incident reportedly found two Housing.com employees responsible for hovering the drone over BARC and TISS.

According to the police, the two men stepped out of a car and the duo flew the drone for just 10-15 minutes, but in that period clicked at least 100 pictures. "We have not yet registered an FIR against them and are contemplating what step needs to be taken. The two claim that they were not aware of the rules and they did so by mistake," said Sangramsinh Nishandar, deputy commissioner of police (zone VI).

"There is a blanket ban on flying drones in the city; if one needs to use it, s/he has to seek permission from the local police station and other authorities. In this case, they had not taken our permission," he added.

This is the second incident of a drone being spotted. In June, drones were spotted over the Mumbai airport in which case two men from Dharmanandan Diamond Pvt Ltd, a Surat-based diamond firm, were arrested.

In 2014, the use of drones without police permission was banned in the city fearing they could potentially be used by terrorists.
