Saquib Nachan, Ateef Mulla, Hasib Mulla have been sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment in Mumbai multiple blast case
A special POTA court on Wednesday awarded life imprisonment to main accused Muzammil Ansari and two other convicted for their roles in multiple blasts in Mumbai between 2002 and 2003.
On March 29, the court had convicted ten out of the thirteen accused in this case. Those convicted are - key accused Saquib Nachan, Ateef Mulla, Hasib Mulla, Ghulam Kotal, Mohammed Kamil, Noor Malik, Anwar Ali Khan, Farhaan Khot, Dr Wahid Ansari and Muzammil Ansari.
Along with Muzammil, Wahid Ansari and Farhan Khot have also been awarded life imprisonment.
The three other convicts Saquib Nachan, Ateef Mulla, Hasib Mulla have been sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment. They will have to undergo two more years in jail.
Rest of the accused will be set free after they furnish bail bonds as per procedure, as they have already undergone their maximum punishment.
Twelve people were killed in Mulund train blasts on March 13, 2003. Prior to that, on December 6, 2002, several persons were injured in a blast at McDonald's at Mumbai Central station, while a person had died in a blast in a market in Vile Parle (East) on January 27, 2003.
Three bombs exploded in three different parts of the city of Mumbai in a span of a little over three months.
The first blast took place on December 6, 2002, at McDonald's restaurant on the main building premises of the Mumbai Central railway station.
The second blast occurred on January 27, 2003, in a crowded market in Vile Parle East, while the third blast took place in a jam-packed Karjat-bound local train at the Mulund railway station on March 13, 2003.
As many as 12 persons died in these blasts and 27 were seriously injured.
The Mumbai Police had said the blasts were the handiwork of Students Islamic Movement of India activists who were led by Saquib Nachan, the former general secretary of the banned outfit.
A total of 16 persons were arrested in the case. Apart from Nachan, those arrested include Muzammil Ansari, an engineer, and Dr Anwar Ali, a PhD degree holder who taught Urdu at National Defence Academy, Pune.
