Few staff members of Mumbai Monorail went on a flash strike from Sunday thereby partially affecting the daily smooth operations. However, the Monorail services between Wadala Depot and Chembur remained unaffected.

Sources informed dna that it wasn't the entire crew and staff, involved with Monorail's operation and maintenance, that proceeded on strike but only a few of them. In all, around 55 staff members protested by not reporting for work.

"Those who did not report to work were station masters and ticketing staff. Therefore, other staff members doubled up their role to ensure operations remains unaffected," a source informed.

Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) spokesperson shared that the sudden strike was called by the Customer Services Assistants employed by the third party M/s TnM due to delay of month's salary from their management.

"In the meantime, tickets from Ticket Vending Machines and paper tickets were sold by the station masters and management and would be continued until the situation is resolved," said Dilip Kawathkar, MMRDA spokesperson.

Additionally, a private security agency too pulled out its manpower from April 30 due to non-payment of dues for the last three months. Now, a new agency has been appointed for the same role. Apart from it, Maharashtra Security Force has been functioning since the start of Monorail operations.

Scomi Engineering, a Malaysian company in charge of operations and maintenance of Mumbai Monorail, has also been taking measures to reduce the overall cost of operations, establishment and administration. Due to this measure, they have been changing few vendors or agencies that is creating unrest indirectly.

"The usual salary credit date has been 26 of every month, but the previous month it was issued on 10, likewise, even this month there has been a delay is clearing the pay," added another source. Several staff members have either been residing in Mumbai in rental homes or have Equated Monthly Installments (EMI) to pay off for loans. The delay in remuneration has made them to default on EMIs.
