Mumbai: Mob vandalises police station after row over Facebook post, police vehicles set ablaze

17 people were arrested for rioting.

Outraged over an objectionable post by a man on social media, a group of 20 people allegedly vandalised a police station in suburban Trombay where he was kept after being arrested, in the early hours of Sunday.

According to the police, a complaint was lodged on Saturday against the man for an objectionable post by him on Facebook that allegedly hurt some religious sentiments. after which the accused was under arrest. However, the outraged mob demanded that the accused be handed over to them and in a fit of rage, they also set ablaze some police vehicles outside the police station. The incident led to tension in the area. 

The man was arrested and booked under IPC section 295 (injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to hurt religion).

The situation is under control now and we have increased security in the area to avoid any untoward incident,"said Shahaji Umap , Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone-VI.
