The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has initiated the procedure to procure platform screen doors to install at all the metro stations of the underground Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ line. "The opening of pre-qualification bids to finalise the bidders for procurement of Platform Screen Doors has been planned shortly," said an MMRC official.

Platform screen doors are installed on the edge of the platforms, towards the trains. There are multiple benefits of having such a facility. "Height of this door will be around 7-8 feet and will cost approximately Rs 95 crore to buy and get it installed," said an official.

It not only prevents accidental falls or suicide attempts off the platform onto the track area, improve cooling and ventilation at the stations, prevent littering on to the tracks, cut-off noise coming from tunnels, etc.

In all there are 26 stations planned on the corridor. These stations are Cuffe Parade, Vidhan Bhavan, Churchgate, Hutatma Chowk, CST Metro, Kalbadevi, Girgaon, Grant Road, Mumbai Central, Mahalaxmi Metro, Science Museum, Acharya Atre Chowk, Worli, Siddhi Vinayak, Dadar Metro, Shitaladevi Temple, Dharavi, BKC Metro, Vidya Nagari, Santa Cruz, Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport (Domestic), Sahar Road, Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Marol Naka, MIDC and SEEPZ.

The MMRC has awarded civil contracts for the 33.5km fully underground corridor recently to five consortia. Although the physical construction of Metro-3 will commence post monsoon, the contractors are gearing up to set up of offices, mobilisation of project team, mobilisation of design consultants, topographic survey, setting out alignment, carrying out geotechnical survey, planning of utility and traffic diversions, preparation of barricades, preparation of construction schedule and negotiations with suppliers of long lead equipments and material.

The corridor is scheduled to be ready by the year 2020. Meanwhile, process is on to rehabilitate project affected families to different locations of Mumbai.
