The RCF police on Monday booked a man for allegedly murdering a cat by stabbing it with a screwdriver and later hanging it with a rope in Chembur.

The man later shared a picture of the ghastly act on social media.

According to the police, the incident took place on May 15 and the cat was later dumped by the accused in a garbage bin.

The complainant Nirali Koradia, an Animal Welfare officer of Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), received the picture before approaching the police.

On tracing the photograph, the police discovered that a man identified only as  Sanju had committed the crime and hanged the cat outside his Chembur home.

"As I saw the photo, I tweeted to Mumbai Police and asked to register an FIR. They then directed me to go to RCF police station. I think the person who unleashes cruelty on animals can also become the abuser of women and children. They are a threat to society and we should always have our eyes and ears ope," Koradia said.

The police has registered a case under relevant sections of Indian Penal code and under sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. The accused is said to have some medical issues, our probe is on," said Shrikant Desai, Senior Police Inspector of RCF Police Station.
