Following the incident of rape of a multinational executive in Delhi by an Uber call-a-cab driver, the Mumbai police is contemplating cancelling the licences of those drivers having criminal background. On Thursday, there was a meeting in this regard at police commissioner Rakesh Maria's office.

Joint commissioner of police, traffic, BK Upadhyay, joint commissioner of police, law and order, Dhananjay Kamlakar, and Special Branch chief Chagan Wakade were present at the meeting, sources said.

The issue of how the verification of radio cabs and tourist vehicle drivers should be conducted in tandem with the Regional Transport Office was discussed at length in the meeting. The verification of criminal record has been assigned to the Special Branch. The process of background check is expected to take four months, sources said.

"The nature of the criminal case against those drivers with criminal background will be evaluated. Accordingly, we are contemplating cancelling the licences of drivers with criminal history," said joint commissioner Upadhyay.
