The pilot of the Jet Airways plane which had a narrow escape from a mishap on Friday, further endangered the passengers by not using the emergency evacuation plan, reports a leading English daily

The carrier had a high risk of catching fire after coming to a halt tilting on its right side with the right engine touching the ground.

Nearly 120 passengers and eight crew members onboard the flight 9W 354 from New Delhi stayed inside the plane after its main landing gear collapsed when it landed here.

The passengers were inside for close to 40 minutes as fire tenders sprayed water and foam on the plane. They were later asked to step out of the plane using a stepladder.

Major sparks were seen from under the engine as it scraped the ground during landing.

Images circulated on Twitter show the crater created by the impact of the right engine of the plane hitting the runway, which was later closed

As the right-hand main wheel assembly of the aircraft collapsed, the carrier did not have the support as it came down speedily. It tilted, which resulted in the engine grazing the ground.

Capt Mohan Ranganathan, former member of the government's Civil Aviation Safety Advisory Council said that the carrier could have caught fire if the fuel tanks been pierced.

Ranganathan told the daily,

Since a fire on the wing or fuselage does not generate a warning in the cockpit, the pilots would not have known about it, unless alerted by flight attendants who could have seen it. Hence, the standard operating procedure during such an emergency is to initiate an evacuation,"

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has reportedly asked for an inquiry.

Jet Airways spokesperson, in an email statement, responded, "Events such as these need careful assessment of various factors by the operating Flight Crew, who are entrusted with the responsibility of taking the safest course of action."

AT A GLANCE
Guidelines from the Boeing Training Manual regarding evacuation:
'When there is a need to evacuate passengers and crew, the captain has to choose between commanding an emergency evacuation using the emergency escape slides or less urgent means such as deplaning using stairs, jetways, or other means. All available sources of information should be used to determine the safest course of action including reports from the cabin crew, other airplanes, and air traffic control. The captain must then determine the best means of evacuation by carefully considering all factors. These include, but are not limited to:
  • the urgency of the situation, including the possibility of significant injury or loss of life if a significant delay occurs
  • the type of threat to the airplane, including structural damage, fire, reported bomb on board, etc.
  • the possibility of fire spreading rapidly from spilled fuel or other flammable materials
  • the extent of damage to the airplane
  • the possibility of passenger injury during an emergency evacuation using the escape slides'

The statement further said that, "The safest course of action during any event is decided based on the airline operating manual and reading of the actual situation on ground at that given time. In the case of flight 9W354, all 120 guests and 8 crew were safely disembarked without any injuries."

Jet Airways further stated that pilots and cabin crew in Jet Airways are provided extensive training on a continuous basis to handle emergency situations.

The matter pertaining to flight 9W 354 is under investigation and Jet Airways is providing all co-operation to the investigating agencies.
