A prisoner lodged in Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail committed suicide by hanging himself inside his cell on Monday morning.

A prisoner lodged in Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail committed suicide by hanging himself inside his cell on Monday morning.
The prisoner has been identified as Shabbirali Garibulla Shaikh(26).
Police officials told DNA that the incident took place at 4 am. They said that Shaikh was mentally unsound and was undergoing psychiatric treatment by the jail doctor. On Monday, when the prison guards were away, he hanged himself using a bed sheet. “He had tried killing himself earlier, but we prevented it. No suicide note has been found,” a police official said.
Shaikh had been jailed two years ago on charges of murder and attempt to murder. The NM Joshi Marg police have registered an accidental death report in the matter and probing the incident.
