On Sunday afternoon, a day prior to her son's exam, Rupa Shah (44), a South Mumbai housewife reportedly jumped off the fifth floor of the Ramlal Mansion building near Bombay Hospital.

The Shah family owns two terrace flats on the fifth floor of the building. At the time of the incident, Shah's 13-year-old son was studying in the other flat while her brother-in-law's 14-year-old son was eating food in the other room of the same flat. There was also a maid who was doing the laundry in the bathroom.

Shah's husband Vikas and her two brother-in-laws own a Chartered Accountancy firm in Kalbadevi, Girgaon. At the time of incident, the Shah family had gone to Worli for a family function while Rupa stayed back because her son was to appear for an exam on Monday.

According to the Vijay Kadam, Senior Police Inspector of Azad Maidan police station, "Rupa's own flat has a grill around the terrace, while the other doesn't. She completed her daily chores and made her son study in the other room before taking the drastic step."

"The watchman was in the building compound when he saw Rupa fall off from the terrace. He informed the other residents, the police control room and the Shah family," Kadam added. The victim was declared dead before admission at GT hospital.

While the police did not find a suicide note in the residence, according to the police, the family too was unaware about the reason for her taking the extreme step.

"We are recording statements of her family members. Her husband, her twin sister, and her parents who live in Matunga too were shocked at her death. No particular reason has been found till now. However, we are not negating any factor," another officer added.
