Jogeshwari-based Jai Jawan Govinda Pathak has decided to donate the entire sum of money earned by them while performing in the Chor Handi events to a family who lost their breadwinner in the recent Mahad Bridge collapsed incident. In order to contribute for this social cause, this year the group participated for the first time in a Chor Handi which is considered to be sarav shibri — a practice session organised by few Govinda mandals before the Gokulashtami festival.

Talking about their decision, David Fernandes, a member of Jai Jawan Dahi Handi Mandal, said: "So far we have performed human pyramid in Chor Handi organised at five different places and collected over Rs1.5 lakh. On August 21, we will be performing at two more places and the total money collected will be given to Prashant Mane's family on Gokulashtami. This is the first time we have performed at the sarav shibri. After knowing about the social cause, many organisers who conduct Chor Handi themselves invited us to perform a human pyramid and donated a particular amount of money for this initiative."

Jogeshwari-based resident Prashant Mane lost his life on August 2 when the British era bridge collapsed near Savitri River in Mahad. Mane was travelling in the State Transport Jaigad-Mumbai bus. He is survived by his wife, mother and a 10-month-old daughter. Speaking about why they initiated this cause, Fernandes, said: "Prashant was a classmate of one of our group members. The member spoke to us about the incident. We wanted to support the family by extending a helping hand. Rather than a few members coming forward and contributing, our coach Sandeep Dawale came up with the idea of participating in the sarva shibri this year and use our skills to contribute for the cause. We have more than 400 members in our pathak."

The pathak performed 8-tier human pyramid at Young Umarkhadi Govinda Mandal (YUGM) in Mazgaon on August 17.
