Ark Deck Bar, a floatel also known as floating restaurant capsized near the sea near Bandra-Worli Sea-Link on Friday afternoon. At least 15 persons who were onboard were safely rescued and there was no report of loss of life.

Ironically, on Friday, the floatel was having its last event before the monsoon.

Vikram Kumar, Chief Executive Officer, Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) said, "It will be wrong to say the vessel capsized but it got tilted. The license of the floatel was till Friday evening and it was being taken to 'bhaucha dhakka' for anchoring during the monsoon season. However, due to choppy sea, the vessel probably hit a rock and a hole was created in the vessel after which water entered the vessel."

"After water started entering, the vessel tilted and subsequently around 13 crew members inside called another boat and were rescued and are safe. To ascertain the exact cause of the vessel tilting, we have called divers who will help us find the exact reason behind Friday's incident," Kumar added.

A spokesperson for Ark Deck Bar said, "At around 6.15 pm there was a storm in the seas. Due to this the anchor detached and shifted on one side. Due to shifting of  weight  the boat began to tilt. The captain had gauged the severity beforehand and cleared the boat. There were 15 people who were rescued. The boat capsized at around 7.10pm."

While Assistant Police Inspector Sunil Danave from Sagari Police Station, said, “Probably due to some malfunction the floatel started sinking. Around 15 persons who were onboard were safely rescued from their own rescue boats. Nobody drowned in the incident. Around 2.30 pm, the floatel had started capsizing. No criminal case is being registered in the matter."

In order to promote tourism and promote coast-line tourism in the state, Maharashtra government has been promoting having floating hotels. Currently, three floatels are near Bandra-Worli Sea-Link and two are proposed to be operational near Gateway of India post monsoon.

Meanwhile, from it’s Twitter handle @arkdeckbar on Friday afternoon, the floatel had tweeted, “Experience the colours of sunset, chilled beats & ocean waves make the perfect ending of our last evening. We will be back by the end of September, till then stay tuned.”
