The services of Western Railway were affected on Tuesday morning after an empty coach of an express train derailed between Elphinstone & Lower Parel railway station.

The trains on the slow track have been diverted to the fast track while the trains on the fast track are running an hour late.

"Slow local lines are affected. Fast lines working only. Restoration work is in full swing," tweeted Western Railway.

No person has been injured in the incident. Ravindra Bhakar, chief public relations officer, WR said the incident took place at around 2am and that work on removing the coach was on.

Speaking to dna, Western Railway DRM said, "We have asked BEST to run additional services. Of the 260/270 odd services that we run during morning hours, about 60-70 have been affected."

He further added, "The train that has derailed has not been brought back on track. Now we will move on to, what you call is, the roll-up operation followed by fixing the over-head wire."

By 12.15 the services should be up and running, he added.

A commuter who has to head to Jogeshwari for work said, "I got to know about the services being terminated at Lower Parel via news. It's only when I reached the station about five minutes ago I realised that there are hardly few passengers."

Crowd at Parel station

One woman who identified herself as Sadhana said that she had boarded a train going to CST with her son but had got down at Parel station. However, the two got separated in the crowd. She's been waiting on the bridge for over 15 minutes trying to spot her son.

WR restoration work to extend into afternoon

Western Railway officials monitoring the coach toppling incident close to Lower Parel station told DNA that the clearing work might extend into the afternoon.

Officials said the overhead wires and equipment have been damaged and work on recharging them will begin after the mega-crane removes the toppled coach from the site.

Prima facie, officials said, it seems that the west side buffer of the coach got entangled with some infringing equipment because of which it derailed and then toppled pr capsized as the railways term it. The coach was going from the Lower Parel workshop to the Lower Parel yard for night stabling when the incident occurred.
