Mumbai: 41 dead after consuming hooch in Malvani; 21 critical

A total of 41 people have died after consuming illicit liquor in a slum near a resort in Malad, a suburb of Mumbai. Nine more are said to be in critical condition. "Death toll gone upto 41 and 21 more are critical and admitted in various hospitals," said deputy commissioner of police, detection, Dhananjay Kulkarni.

The tragedy occurred at Lakshminagar Zopadpatti (slum) near Gamdevi Jurassic Park in Malvani area of Malad, said DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni to Iamin. Kulkarni said several persons drank the concoction last night and by 7:30 pm this evening.

While three of the deaths were reported from Prime Hospital, 4 have been confirmed from Shatabdi hospital and 5 from BMC hospital. 1 more death has been reported from Siddharth hospital. Additionally, 7 people are said to be in critical condition, said Kulkarni. Out of these, 1 has been admitted to KEM hospital and 6 from Shatabdi hospital.

The dead include Ramesh Jhataka (40), Duttaram Gamle (42), Laxman (40), Harish Kamani (25) and Munna Sheikh (38) 

Kulkarni added that one Raju Langada has been detained by the police in connection with the tragedy. He was selling country liquor illegally in the area.

He said Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria has ordered the Crime Branch to take over the case.

DCP of Zone 11, Vikram Deshmane said to Iamin, "We have registered a case of selling liquor illegally, and have detained one person. We can say anything more on this only after further investigation.

"We are in the primary stage of investigation and not in a position to divulge much details," said Fatteh Singh Patil, Additional Commissioner of Police (North) to PTI.

He said details like the kind and make of the liquor, where it was brewed and the number of people who drank it will be known after investigation.

In 2004, 87 people died after consuming spurious liquor in suburban Vikhroli. Nineteen people were convicted and jailed in connection with the incident which became famous by the name of 'Vikhroli hooch tragedy'.
