The 5th and 6th coach of a Kasara-CST (N-4) 12-car local uncouple — railway lingo for coming loose — on the fast line between Diva and Parsik Tunnel at 8.02am on Sunday.

No injury was reported to any passenger but due to this, 3 locals were held up behind on the section. Subsequently, all Up fast line services (towards CST) were diverted on Up slow line from Kalyan to Thane station. Services on the affected section were cleared at 10.08 am.

A high-level inquiry has been instituted to check if the uncoupling was due to some technical problems or due to poor maintenance of the rake in the crashed.

CR officials said that the mishap was less severe as it was a Sunday and trains moving towards CST during the early morning hours are not crowded. "However it is a worrying incident because coaches of a train getting disconnected is one of the most dangerous aspects of a commute. If it happens at high speeds, it could cause loss of life as well as heavy damage to the tracks and other rail equipment," said an official.

In a similar incident of a train's coaches uncoupling, a man was killed on March 20, 2014 after 5 coaches of N-18 (Kasara-CST) local uncoupled and derailed between Titwala and Ambivli station (61 km from CST) at around 2:50pm.
