The Chheda Nagar junction on Ghatkopar's Eastern Express Highway (EEH) is likely to witness commencement of construction of a maze of flyovers later this year. This junction is where the EEH, Eastern Freeway, Santa Cruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) and Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road (GMLR) meet.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has invited bids for the "improvement of Chheda Nagar junction". The estimated price for the project is Rs204.33 crore, which is likely to shoot up in the months to come. The tenders are likely to be awarded either by end of March or sometime in April.

The plan is to construct two flyovers and an elevated road to decongest the junction in Ghatkopar (E). "There will be a 680-meter-long and 3-lane-wide flyover (Rs57.66 crore) from Sion towards Thane running parallel to the existing 3-lane flyover. Another 1,240-meter-long 2-lane flyover (Rs94.39 crore) will run from above the existing Chheda Nagar flyover and carry traffic coming from Navi Mumbai towards Thane.

Also planned is a 650-meter-long and 2-lane elevated road (Rs 52.28 crore) to connect the existing Chheda Nagar flyover with Amar Mahal Junction flyover," said an MMRDA official.

dna had first reported on September 16, 2014, about MMRDA's plan to have a maze of bridges at this junction. A year ago on January 12, 2015, the MMRDA executive committee had approved the Chheda Nagar junction improvement project for implementation.

Initially, while the project was being conceptualised, the development body had three alternatives to select from. These alternatives had flyovers and underpasses with varying length and designs.
