The Catholic Church is likely to issue a statement protesting against legalising euthanasia. It may also call for a complete ban on surrogacy. It will be, as the church puts it, for the "solidarity and continual support to promote, preserve and protect the gift of human life".

The statement will be released after it is placed before the 500 members of the community who have been attending a 3-day symposium, 'National Symposium on Protecting, Preserving and Promoting the Gift of Human Life: Emerging Challenges', at Goregaon seminary since Friday.

"The draft against surrogacy and statement on euthanasia would be read out. On euthanasia, most (Catholic) doctors present here are in sync with the church," said Bishop Agnelo Gracias, the man behind the symposium, which is being organised by Catholic Conference of Bishops of India (CCBI) Commission for Theology and Doctrine.

Speakers who attended the symposium till the first half of Saturday, spoke about the ills of the issues, probably because most who had gathered were against it," said Gracias.

"We got to hear a number of things that concern the church," said Judith Monteiro, one of the people who attended the symposium.

On Sunday, 36 speakers are to address the gathering and are expected to speak on issues pertaining to surrogacy, euthanasia, contraceptives and test tube babies.
