Roads department of the BMC has claimed that there are only 2017 potholes in the city until Saturday. And if we believe what civic body claims then the civic roads department has filled 1,873 potholes and only 144 potholes are pending to be attended. Given the civic records, Borivli is the most pothole-ridden area in the city followed by Andheri West. However, ground reality tells us a different tale.

Number of potholes revealed to the media are conservative figure which are far from the actual situation. Areas like Dahisar and Borivali, Thakur Village in Kandivli-East, Malad, Andheri have more potholes than what has been shown. However, civic authorities defends themselves by claiming that they act promptly on the complaints received to them.

What irritates the most is the shoddy work done by the contractors for filling of potholes. "Agreed that the civic body has to fill up the potholes in dry spell, but why cannot they ensure that the potholes are filled during given period. The gravel from the potholes is washed out and tar is spread on the road. This leads to an uneven rough road-ride. The pace of the traffic slows down badly leaving the staggering effect behind," said a resident of Borivali where maximum number of potholes are registered.

Andheri West — the ward of Yashodhar Phanse, chairman of Standing Committee — has second highest number of potholes. In Island City areas like Colaba, Fort, Churchgate, Marine lines, CST have reported huge number of potholes, Dadar has highest number of potholes followed Byculla, Parel, Lalbaug, Sion, Matunga.

In western suburbs, Borivli is followed by Andheri, Bandra, Khar, Santa Cruz, Kandivli and Goregaon has maximum potholes. In Eastern Suburbs, Kurla, Govandi, Mankhurd, Chembur, Trombay, Ghatkopar and Bhandup have maximum number of potholes.
