Mumbai: Bogus credit card racket busted, four arrested

Police said that they have seized 92 bogus credit cards and nine driving licences them.

A major bogus credit card racket has been busted by the city crime branch. The police have arrested four persons, who used to allegedly procure stolen data of credit card holders from a Nigerian national and prepare bogus cards on the basis of the said data and use them for purchases in malls and shopping centres. The Nigerian national and blank card provider is under the scanner of police in this case.

The arrested quartet has been identified as Nitin Ingle, Faizi Raza, Jaisingh Rathod and Vishwajeet Chhatri, all residents of Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. According to the police sources, Bandra unit of crime branch had received specific information that four persons involved in procuring stolen data of credit card holders from a Nigerian national, feed the said data in laptops, then put the said data in blank cards and prepare bogus credit cards. On the basis of these cards, they purchase in malls and shopping centres.

"On receipt of specific information that the four fraudsters would be arriving near Shoppers Stop in Bandra (W), a trap was laid. They were arrested as soon as they arrived in a car on Saturday. We have seized 92 bogus credit cards, 9 driving licences, some incriminating documents and a car from them. The gang also used to prepare bogus documents that could be used while doing purchases," said a crime branch officer.

The quartet has told the police in their inquiry that they used to buy blank cards from a man known as Raj and the Nigerian national who used to provide them with stolen customer data has been identified as Odu. "Raza is mastermind of this racket and we are probing since how long the racket is functioning and if more members are associated with this gang. Arrests of Raj and Odu will helps us ascertain if they used to provide data and blank cards to other gangs," said the officer.
