Mumbai: At least 1 killed, 2 injured after building collapses in Chandivali during BMC demolition drive

One person was killed and at least two suffered serious injuries when a building collapsed during a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation demolition drive in Mumbai’s Chandivali area.

The incident took place at 5.30 pm, says Times of India, while other reports suggest it may have happened at 5.15 pm.

According to India.com, The six-storey building, Crystal Business Park, collapsed as soon as the BMC officials initiated the demolition work.

According to the Times of India report, three people, who were rescued by the Mumbai fire brigade and were admitted to Rajawadi hospital in Ghatkopar. One of the them, Gaurav, 32, was declared brought dead by the doctors while other two, Bablu, 25, Pavan,19, sustained fractures in their legs.

Four are still trapped inside the building.

2 JCBs were stationed at the site to assist in the evacuation operation.  

The demolition drives are pitched up by the BMC in monsoon, as the risk of dilapidated buildings collapsing escalates due to the incessant rainfall.

The incident took place barely a month after a building in Ghatkopar collapsed, killing 17 people. That incident was due to Shiv Sena member Sunil Shitap illegally altering the foundation structure, resulting in the collapse.
