The main runway at Mumbai Airport will remain shut between 2-5 PM for upgradation work. This is likely to affect normal flight operatiions, according to sources. However, the secondary runway will be working, so the operations will not completely get halted in that time period.

According to ANI, the runway is being closed for work relating to Instrument Land system.

Currently, primary runway can handle 48 flights (arrivals and departures) per hour, whereas the secondary one can handle 35 flights. So, obviously primary runway being closed for three hours is likely to affect schedule of several flights in that time frame. So, if you are travelling to or out of Mumbai airport today afternoon, check with your airlines for possibly revised schedule.

The Mumbai airport has already crossed its installed capacity of 40 million passengers. Last year, it handled over 45 million passengers.

The city airport is the busiest single runway airport in the world, handling around 970 flights a day or close to one aircraft movement per 65 seconds.
