The boy's heart was donated to a seven-year-old girl, who was suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy
A seven-year-old boy became the youngest cadaver donor in the state after he was declared brain dead at Hinduja hospital in Mahim on Sunday. The boy was suffering from cerebral venous thrombosis and his relatives consented to donate his organs to Jaslok and Jupiter hospitals for deserving recipients.
The heart was received by a seven-year-old girl, who was on the waiting list for over a month at Fortis Hospital in Mulund. The recipient was suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy — an end stage heart disease. This is the state's ninth successful heart transplant and second pediatric heart transplant.
After the evaluation and assessment, Fortis hospital's Dr Anvay Mulay, head of cardiac transplant team, rushed to retrieve the heart. Mulay left with the donor heart at 2.30am, reaching Fortis Hospital, Mulund at 2.48am, covering 26kms in just 18mins.
The adult cardiac and pediatric cardiac team came together to conduct the transplant procedure that concluded at 07.14am and the girl was subsequently moved to the ICU.
Dr Vijay Agarwal, head of pediatric cardiac surgery at Fortis, said: "It is an exceptional task to find a compatible match, in terms of age, weight, height and blood group. We found a perfect match in this donor from Hinduja Hospital. It has given a ray of hope to this young patient. The transplant surgery has been successfully concluded. The patient has been moved to the ICU and is now stable. She will be kept under observation for the next 48-72 hours."
This is second consecutive day were Fortis hospital performed a heart transplant. On, Saturday hospital had performed a heart transplant procedure on a 29-year-old male, where the recipient got the heart from Aurangabad.
Mulay said: "We now see the wheels of progressive change being set in motion. Pediatric cardiac surgeries are witnessing as much momentum as adult cardiac surgeries. Increased awareness about the importance of organ donation has been pivotal for this change. We will continue to work tirelessly to further the cause, and educate key influencer groups who can drive further awareness".
Green Corridor
Traffic divisions of Mahim, Vikhroli and Mulund — who strategically laid out the Green Corridor — followed the route of PD Hinduja National Hospital & Medical Research Centre, Mahim–Kalanagar Junction–Bandra-Kurla Complex–Amar Mall-Chedda Nagar-Eastern Express Highway-Airoli Junction and finally to Fortis hospital in Mulund. With the donor heart reaching straight into the OT at 02.49am, the cardiac team comprising Mulay and Agarwal immediately commenced the surgery at 02.52am.
