Mumbai: 20 NGOs form expert group to tackle disability issues

The 20 NGOs who are known for their quality of programs in the disability space had joined Gati formed by Atma NGO.

A Mumbai based NGO Atma formed Gati an expert group from 20 different NGOs from city working with students/persons with disabilities have come together today (Friday) to discuss challenges they face while working with the person with disabilities. Gati a group have been formed to bring a change in disability sector and address some key issues like employment issues, being able to get quality trained teachers for students with disabilities and government support.

The 20 NGOs who are known for their quality of programs in the disability space had joined Gati formed by Atma NGO. Groups working on key challenges participated in discussion that happened today at Jai Vakeel School at Parel. Groups will do site visits and work in groups over a period of one year as a part of Gati consortium. The issues they face will be studied and published as a white paper. The solutions will be taken to the Government of Maharashtra soon. While some NGO discussed about how to sensitize society about the needs of children with mentally challenged, another NGO discussed about the limited availability of the experts/therapists for NGOs working with children with disabilities and some discussed about lack of funds and on many disabilities government provides certificate on only one disability, quality education for children with disabilities etc.

Prakash More, Anandi Foundation, CEO and Director, said, “We have vocational centre for persons with disabilities. We discussed about the long term planning on vocational training for persons with disabilities and how we will have to take support of government, corporate and NGOs for their employment. We are facing challenges in getting professionals like occupational therapists, pysiotherapist etc and how the availability should be made of these professionals who work with big hospitals and difficult to get to work for NGOs. NGOs face problem in paying heavily to such professionals. Fund raising is also an issue for NGOs.”

Archana Chandra, CEO, Jai Vakeel Foundation, said, “Basically how do you create a more sensitize society to the needs of a person who is mentally challenged was a topic of our discussion. We work with mentally challenged children and we call lot of main stream schools to interact with our children and result is miraculous. So how do we have more sensitize, aware and inclusive society was discussed today.”
 
Atma executive director Mary Ellen Matsui, said, “Gati is a place for knowledge creation and sharing in the disabilities space. At, Gati, participants showcased their work, network with peers, learn cutting edge best practices and advance the causes access to quality education by authoring white papers.”
