Mukul Roy resigns from Rajya Sabha, keeps suspense about future political move

Suspended TMC leader Mukul Roy on Wednesday formally tendered his resignation from Rajya Sabha. He met Vice President Venkaiah Naidu and tendered his resignation. 

Roy was one of the most senior TMC leader and was seen as the right hand man of West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee before falling out with her. However, after resignation Mukul Roy gave no real hint about his political future. 

He said, "  Today I am resigning from RS membership elected as a member of TMC, also resign from all posts of TMC as a primary member". Mukul further remarked, "  I have resigned, now I will go for leaves and then decide my future course of action". After resignation, Mukul Roy said that he was compelled to leave the party. He also took a jibe at Mamata Banerjee, saying one man show is not good. Mukul said that one man show and dynastic politics are not acceptable. He further said members in a party should be comrades and not servants. Mukul Roy said that he is resigning with a heavy heart and heavy pain.

Incidentally, Mukul Roy's son continues to be a TMC MLA.  Reacting to Mukul's resignation, TMC leader Partha Chatterjee said that he buckled under pressure from BJP and CBI. According to TMC, Bengal is saved as Mukul Roy has left the party.  With Mukul's jibe at dynastic politics on Wednesday, his chances of joining Congress also looks deem according to political experts. 

On Monday, Rajya Sabha MP Roy had said, "Finally, I am going to hand over my resignation to the Vice President on October 11 and then I will tell the people of this country why I decided to end my long political innings with the TMC, the party I founded with many others." He met the BJP's West Bengal BJP in-charge Kailash Vijayvargiya at the residence of Rajya Sabha House Committee chairperson Om Mathur on Monday.

Roy had said though the meeting with Vijayvargiya was not scheduled, the BJP leader had asked about his plans. He also met Finance Minister Arun Jaitley last week. Once the second-in-command in the TMC after Chief Minister Banerjee, Roy was suspended for six years for "anti-party activities" last month. The TMC had accused him of hobnobbing with the BJP.
