Former TMC leader Mukul Roy on Friday accused a section of the media of misconstruing his statements on TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee.

Referring to the statement that he didn't think Mamata knew about the involvement of TMC leaders in Saradha- Narada scams, he said, "My statement has been misconstrued by a section of the media. I never gave any clean chit to anyone. The investigation into the Saradha and Narada cases are being done by Central investigating agencies under the order of the Supreme Court and High Court respectively. I am not an authority to give any clean chit to anyone. I had only said that I felt she didn't know," he said as he left the Delhi office of the Election Commission of India (EC).

He also said that he would cooperate with the investigating agencies. Interestingly, Enforcement Directorate (ED) has sent fresh summons to Mukul Roy along with Saugata Roy, Kakali Ghosh Dastidar and Prasun Bandopadhyay. ED sources said they would want to wrap up primary round of investigation by November end.

Roy brushed aside speculations that his visit to the EC was because he wanted to float a new political party saying, "I don't intend to float any new political party. It had been my habit to visit the EC regularly since 1997. That is why nearly all the officials know me personally here. There are three byelections pending in Bengal. As a citizen of India and a voter of West Bengal I requested the EC to ensure a free and fair election in Bengal.

On Thursday, expelled TMC leader Kunal Ghosh levelled several charges against Roy saying it was not possible that Roy had no idea of the corrupt practices of party leaders. "He had at one point of time, at Somen Mitra's place, said that had it not been for Arun Jaitley he would have been behind bars," Ghosh had said.

Senior Congress leader Mitra, too, had corroborated it saying, "Yes. He was at my residence and abruptly said that he had been saved by Jaitley."
