Nearly a year after the Centre approved the Uttar Pradesh government’s proposal, the iconic Mughalsarai railway station was officially renamed as the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Junction on Monday.

Last year, the central government had cleared UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's request to rename the station, in a bid to revive the legacy of Upadhyaya, who was found dead in 1968 in the junction itself.

The move had led to an uproar in Parliament after several MPs including Samajwadi Partys Naresh Agarwal protested against the government's decision to give the nod.

Meanwhile, taking a dig at BJP, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said, "If you vote BJP, then names of cities and stations will change. If you vote AAP, then the future of your children will change."

Senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan also took a dig at Yogi Adityanath. "Who says that the Yogi government isn't working? Amidst all the heavy work done to provide oxygen to children at Gorakhpur Hospital, beating up people for Cows, & battering women thru Romeo squads, Yogi still got time to change the name of Mughalsarai Jn to Pandit Deendayal Jn!," Bhushan tweeted.

The junction, the fourth busiest railway station in the country, is located on the main Howrah-Delhi Grand Chord line.

Upadhyay's body was found under mysterious circumstances on a platform of Mughalsarai in 1968. The town is part of Chandauli district and is just 20 km from Varanasi.

Mughalsarai is also the birthplace of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.

The station contains the largest railway marshaling yard in Asia. It is 12.5 km long and handles around 1,500 wagons daily. The largest wagon repair workshop of the Indian Railways is also located here.
